About Derek Vanderheide:
Derek Vanderheide has been managing and tending bar in Vancouver ever since 1998
save for a year-long hiatus in Sydney, Australia which opened his eyes to the true
potential of what Bartenders and Bartending have to offer to the culinary experience.
Flash forward several years of managing some of Vancouver’s busiest restaurants and
bars, he finally found a fit at the Metropolitan Hotel, replacing Simon Ogden as Head
Bartender before joining the opening team at the Shangri-La Hotel in 2009 as Head
Bartender in the Lounge.
Working alongside some this industry’s top chefs and service professionals definitely
shows in his passion for the craft of the cocktail and knowledge of all things beverage.
Currently managing, serving and tending bar at Calabash Bistro in Gastown, Derek
brings a classic approach to bartending, with a flair for the unexpected and a deep
knowledge of spirits (especially rums!).
